Recipe Finder - Betty Crocker, Ford Treasury of Famous Recipes From Famous Eating Places & More

"Read your blog and wondered if you can help. We lost pages 71 and 72 of our 1963 Betty Crocker Cookbook and it has punch recipes that our son loves. We want to make the punch for his birthday but don't have the recipe. Do you have access to those recipes? If so, can you email them to me. I would really appreciate it." - .J C.

"I was looking for a Banana Nut Bread recipe out of a Ford Treasury Cookbook and wanted to know if you had it." - A.V.

"I saw your lost recipe blog spot and am hoping that you can tell me how to find a Corn and Cabbage Skillet recipe from April 1974 Better Homes and Gardens magazine. I have the picture page but no recipe! I remember that it was a delicious favorite but haven't made it in years! I have tried to find it on the BHG website but recipes don't go back that far. - C.M.

Let me "count the ways" to finding a lost recipe:

Dolores Stephenson's Blog
When you need to find a lost recipe, a family recipe, a Betty Crocker recipe, etc., email me. Details about your lost recipe like a title, a main ingredient or a cookbook cover are helpful. I will do a free search and reply to you by email. Email access for finding a lost recipe: deestephenson@comcast.net

Food Time Line Library
Sometimes I search for private collections of cookbooks through the public library. For example, in New Jersey the Morristown Public Library carries a small collection of Betty Crocker Cookbooks, started by food historian, Lyne Olver (1958-2015). Lynn Olver's list of cookbooks is accessible through her food time line link of cookbooks, A-Z, which includes Betty Crocker and Better Homes and Gardens, etc. Contact a librarian to inquire if a Book Scan Station is available to copy and export rare pages of a historic cookbook.

Sinclair Jerseyena Cookbooks
I began my research for out-of-date New Jersey community cookbooks in the hidden archives of Rutgers University Library. A short woman in a long-sleeve white shirt and brown skirt led me to a private room, opened a cardboard box, pointed to the pocket change copier and left me to my research.  Phone, instant message, email or go in person to your university library for an appointment to find your lost recipe.

Chowhound and MyTaste
Nail down your local recipe exchange and start a conversation with the food and recipe lovers that specialize in Betty Crocker or other brands. Two, I have found helpful are Chowhound and MyTaste. Simply join the conversation and ask the owner for a copy of the recipe. More often than not, he or she will be happy to send it to you within a day or two.

How Databases and Search Engines Differ
My favorite tip from the University Library of Illinois and the New York Times for when you do a word search of any kind is: "Search information is organized and stable at your library's database, but information is not organized and stable when you do a Google search."  I shorten my searches each time I speak to a librarian or visit my home town library.
